UC Riverside and Korea Institute of Materials Science Announce New Research Center

Center for Innovative Materials for Energy and Environment will draw on the strengths of both institutions

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — The University of California, Riverside and the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) have announced a new international partnership to advance the research and development of high performance, environmentally friendly materials. The collaboration was formalized with a ceremony and workshop held Thursday, May 25 at UC Riverside.

The agreement between UCR and KIMS, signed by Interim Provost Cynthia Larive and KIMS President Hai-Doo Kim, establishes the UC-KIMS Center for Innovative Materials for Energy and Environment, which will support collaboration between researchers and students across campus with scientists in South Korea.

KIMS, a government-funded research institute that specializes in the development of new materials such as metals, semiconductors, polymers, and ceramics, is supporting the initiative through a $350,000 commitment to UCR over three years. This joint research collaboration is supported by Research and Economic Development, Bourns College of Engineering, College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and the Office of the Provost, under the auspices of International Affairs.

“The new partnership with KIMS expands UCR’s efforts to promote innovation and cooperation in scholarly research while increasing opportunities for educational exchanges and entrepreneurship activities. As a chemist, I see the Center as an opportunity to translate basic scientific advances to commercial reality. On behalf of the campus, I express my thanks to the Korea Institute of Materials Science for their support and look forward to a productive partnership,” Larive said.

KIMS President Kim said: “UCR and Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) have a long history of collaboration and friendship, which we are pleased to strengthen through the Center for Innovative Materials for Energy and Environment. We are looking forward to working together with UCR to create a sustainable future through innovation in materials science and engineering.”

KIMS President Hai-Doo Kim met with Riverside Mayor Rusty Bailey as part of a May 25 visit to campus.

During their visit, Kim met with UCR Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox and paid a courtesy call on Riverside Mayor Rusty Bailey.  Mayor Bailey welcomed the delegation at City Hall and said he hopes the discussion between UCR and KIMS leads to collaborations with local technology companies. A workshop titled “Innovative Materials for Energy and Environment” marked the beginning of the international partnership.

“By drawing on the strength of both institutions, the Center for Innovative Materials for Energy and Environment will develop new, environmentally friendly materials that can improve energy production and storage,” said Nosang Myung, professor and chair of chemical and environmental engineering at UCR. “The partnership will enable UCR students and faculty to conduct research abroad, access state-of-the art R&D facilities, and seek funding opportunities from Korean federal and local governments. For KIMS, the center will be an opportunity to collaborate with world-renowned researchers, talented students, and U.S. companies.”

Kelechi Kalu, vice provost of international affairs, said the partnership will support the university’s efforts in establishing a scalable collaborative infrastructure for global research and engagement.

“Globalization has intensified the desire for collaboration across issue areas,” Kalu said. “International research, innovation and entrepreneur collaboration can lead to deeper knowledge production that helps to solve common global problems in the areas of energy and environment that transcend international boundaries.”
