UCR alumna and donor Susan Atherton of San Francisco was recently selected as chair-elect of the UCR Foundation Board of Trustees.

In her career, Atherton served in executive management positions in the enterprise software and cloud computing industries, working at NCR Corporation, GE Information Systems, Oracle Corporation, Rightpoint and DoubleClick.

As a member of the UCR Foundation board, she has recently participated on the Trustee Advocacy Committee, the Executive Board, and the Nominations Committee. During the 2014-15 school year, she also participated in the UCR School of Business’ Executive Fellows Program.

As of July 1, 2017, Atherton will become chair-elect, serving alongside current Chair Darin Anderson; she will then take on the role of chair on July 1, 2018.

“It’s an honor to serve in this role and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do so,” said Atherton, who earned her bachelor’s in 1977 in administrative sciences from UCR’s School of Business .

She went on to forge a career in the high-tech industry until her recent retirement. She is now a self-described full-time philanthropist.

She says her focus as chair-elect will be to support the university’s Living the Promise comprehensive fundraising campaign, which aims to raise $300 million by 2020.  The campaign, as of May 24, 2017, had already received more than $172 million in gifts.

Offering her support to the campus has a simple explanation, she said: the students. Their diversity, and that of the campus, the high caliber of the research, and the staff and faculty, all are key factors in her decision to accept the position as chair-elect, she said.

“The priority overall is the welfare of the students,” said Atherton, a first-generation college student herself. She grew up in Ventura County and moved to San Francisco in 1992, where she currently resides.

In 2015 Atherton established the Susan Atherton Endowed Graduate Award Fund. The fund is used to provide support to students from the local Southern California region pursuing a graduate degree at the UCR Anderson Graduate School of Management.

Her volunteer work includes:

  • Previous chair of the board of directors of the American Red Cross Bay Area; she was awarded the American Red Cross Presidential Award for Excellence (a prestigious national award recognizes outstanding employee and volunteer performance).
  • Executive producer and board of directors, San Francisco Playhouse
  • Vice-chair, Humane Society Legislative Fund
  • Board of directors, San Francisco SPCA, chair of the 150th anniversary gala

Also at the May 24 board meeting, fourteen current foundation trustees were re-elected to serve a two-year term, and seven new trustees were elected to two-year terms, which begin on July 1, 2017. They are:

  • Erik Anderson (Irvine – president and co-chair of the A. Gary Anderson Family Foundation)
  • David Blake (Los Altos – senior staff scientist at NASA Ames Research Center)
  • Allison Campbell (Tacoma, Wash. – events manager at Point Defiance Park Pagoda)
  • Kristin Crellin (Santa Ana – vice president of school and community relations, SchoolsFirst Credit Union/OCTFCU)
  • Jo S. Dutton (Rancho Cucamonga – retired educator and administrator)
  • Mark Rubin (Beverly Hills – chairman and CEO of Regional Properties)
  • Mary Schuler (Pasadena – retired educator and administrator)
