Virtual Reality Lounge Returns to ShortFest

UCR’s demonstration of fusing art and technology is free and open to the public June 22-23

virtual reality gogglesPALM SPRINGS, California – A virtual reality lounge at the 2017 Palm Springs International Shortfest will transport visitors to unexpected adventures in a free, two-day event presented by the UC Riverside on June 22 and 23.

It is the second year that UCR has hosted a virtual reality lounge as part of the Palm Springs International Film Society’s ShortFest film festival June 20-16. The virtual reality lounge    will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 22 and 23 at the Riviera Resort and Spa, 1600 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. Free parking is available at the Vista Chino entrance of the resort.

“The VR lounge is the most amazing intersection of art and technology,” said Maggie Downs, associate director of marketing and outreach at the UCR Palm Desert Center. “It was so popular last year that we’ve expanded the offerings   this year, with four different VR experiences – a narrative film,   a documentary, a game, and animation. There will be several headsets for each simulation, so multiple people can experience VR at the same time.”

The films are:

  • “Pearl,” an animated film about a 12-year-old boy who plunders garbage cans in a suburb as he searches for something that gives him a reward.
  • “Women on the Move,” a documentary about a grandmother whose life in rural Niger changes when she enters a women’s saving group. Will her granddaughter take the next step out of poverty?
  • “Sonar,” a narrative film about a drone that discovers an unknown asteroid. On its journey over the rocky surface it receives a strange signal. To locate its source the drone ventures deep into an ancient labyrinth, a place that holds a secret even darker than space itself.
  • “Land’s End,” a game set against spectacular landscapes in which the player is tasked with awakening an ancient civilization using the powers of their mind.
