Professors Mohensian-Rad and Grover Named 2017 Distinguished Teaching Award Winners

Reviving a tradition from the college’s past, Interim Dean of the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering Sharon L. Walker recognized two faculty members with the Distinguished Teaching Award during the annual College Meeting held in June. Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Associate Professor Hamed Mohsenian-Rad and Bioengineering (BIEN) Assistant Professor William Grover were named as the 2017 recipients.

Nominations were accepted from each department and winners were selected from a committee made up of previous award winners including Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Professor David Cocker, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Professor Michalis Faloutsos, ECE Incoming Chair and Professor Ilya Dumer, CSE Professor Eamonn Keogh, and CSE Professor Vassilis Tsotras.

The committee praised both Mohsenian-Rad and Grover for their exceptional level of teaching, many extracurricular activities, and highly innovative teaching techniques.

“Hamed has developed two new highly innovative courses with no textbooks, with one of them being the first offered nationwide for undergrads and the first online engineering course offered for all campuses in the University of California system. These courses required a very innovative approach, much different than graduate level offerings,” said the committee of Hamed’s contributions to teaching.

They said of William’s impact on teaching, “He created the interdisciplinary Technology Evolutionary Components (TEC) Center where students use 3D-printed Lego-like blocks to quickly create and easily customize chemical and biological research instruments. William has also worked extensively to help middle- and high school teachers include engineering content in their science classes.”

Honorable mentions were also awarded to CSE Professor Stefano Lonardi and Mechanical Engineering (ME) Assistant Professor Suveen Mathaudhu.
