The UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) News & Information Outreach in Spanish (NOS) team has a new manager.

Ricardo Vela, a 33-year broadcast journalism veteran, joined ANR in May after the retirement of Myriam Grajales-Hall, who served as the ANR communications manager.

ANR’s Spanish-language office is based out of UC Riverside and is a systemwide service that offers programs and activities across California. NOS primarily promotes the research, work and programs led by UC Cooperative Extension advisors and specialists, and Agricultural Experiment Station faculty. That includes UCR’s own Cooperative Extension specialists and Agricultural Experiment Station scientists.

ANR’s Spanish-language office focuses on disseminating the news and research regarding agriculture, nutrition, natural resources, and more, to Spanish-speaking communities across California.

Vela started his broadcast career after completing a master’s program in film and video from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1989. While he was a student there, he also worked as a freelance writer for the Chicago Tribune and then for many other Spanish-language community papers.

His experience also includes working for Univisión in Chicago, Texas, Los Angeles, and most recently at Entravisión, an Univisión affiliate in Palm Springs, where he served as news director and anchor. His tenure also includes Telemundo in El Paso, Texas, both as a correspondent and later as news director.

Vela’s background will help push ANR’s Spanish-language office to the next level by reaching greater Spanish-speaking audiences in California who can benefit from UC research, said Mike Janes, UC ANR strategic communications director.

“Ricardo is an exciting hire for all of us at UC ANR. His creative new ideas for UC ANR’s News and Information Outreach in Spanish office will engender trust in and appreciation of UC ANR activities and information relevant to Latinos throughout the state,” Janes said.

Vela said he is excited about promoting UC’s work. He is developing strategic plans to promote the research via social media platforms, and is working on short-term and long-term plans to further expose UC in the Spanish-speaking communities, both locally and abroad. Vela said he is also reaching out to media outlets, aiming to form partnerships.

“My intent is to redirect efforts so that our message has greater penetration, greater impact, and the work done at all UC campuses can be available to the Spanish-speaking populations,” Vela said.
