UCR Extension Offers New Specialized Study Program for English-Language Learners

Improve your everyday English-language conversational skills in UCR Extension’s new Specialized Study Program in English as a Second Language.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Whether you have recently moved to the United States, or have lived here for years, improving your English skills will definitely make a difference in your life.  While the Inland Empire is a region that celebrates great diversity, the primary language of business and education is English. To enjoy well-rounded success, you need your English language skills to be the best they can be.

UCR Extension’s new “Specialized Study Program in English as a Second Language” takes instruction in speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading, writing, and grammar to a higher level.  It also offers adult learners (18 and over) who complete the program a UC-approved Professional Achievement Award. UC certificates are always a boost to job applications.

Coordinator Sara Brathwaite says the program was designed with the needs of Inland Empire residents in mind. “We live in a community of people who need English for their jobs and for their lives. They want to connect with their community, and with the world. They are parents who want to communicate with their children’s English-speaking teachers. They are professionals who want to communicate in today’s language of global business. They are neighbors and friends who do not want to be held back by language barriers.”

This new program helps students reach their personal and professional goals in 6 to 18 months.  Classes are offered in beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, and led by professional teachers and assistant teachers.

The program includes practice in English skills for everyday life, such as giving introductions, shopping, finding an apartment, making complaints, preparing for an interview, communicating at work, asking for directions, and more. The program is flexible—take just a few classes, or complete the full program and earn the Specialized Study Award.

To start the program, you can attend a FREE Information Session and take a placement test. You can also take the placement test online from home. The placement test will determine your English level (beginning, intermediate, advanced), and help you decide which classes to take. Call (951) 827-1701, or email sbrathwaite@ucx.ucr.edu to schedule a placement test.

Attend a FREE Information Session at the UCR Extension Center, 5:30-6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, November 28 or Thursday, November 30. Enroll online at www.extension.ucr.edu, or call Student Services at (951) 827-4105. Opportunity awaits.
