Denise Davis Named Redlands ‘Woman of the Year’

Denise Davis, director of the UC Riverside Women’s Resource Center, received the Redlands Woman of the Year award during a city council meeting on Sept. 19. Assemblyman Marc Steinorth presented the award, praising Davis for being an “active, thoughtful leader and member of the Redlands community.”

Davis, who has lived in Redlands for 13 years, said she was “honored, surprised, and touched” by the award. She served as the director of leadership and involvement at the University of Redlands before joining UCR in 2016. In response to the divisiveness of the 2016 presidential election, she has worked with members of the grassroots organization Redlands for Progressive Change and now helps moderate the city’s Common Ground Conversation series of public forums designed to engage residents on either end of the political spectrum.

“The objective is to find common ground and points of agreement, not to debate with the other side,” Davis said of the forums. “We have now held two public events — one on healthcare and another on immigration reform — and have marveled at how we have had panelists and audience members ranging from Tea Party Patriots to Bernie Sanders supporters, and all has been civil. The impact of being in the same room with people from the ‘other side’ of the political spectrum has helped greatly in shattering stereotypes.”

At the council meeting, Davis thanked the community that nominated her for the award. “It truly does take a village,” she said, “and I feel fortunate to have such a strong one.”
