UCR Mechanical Engineering Professor Recipient of The John J. Guarrera Engineering Educator Award of the Year

Cengiz Ozkan and Five Other UCR Faculty Members Honored at National Event

Cengiz Ozkan, professor at the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering, has been named the 2018 recipient of the John J. Guarrera Engineering Educator Award by the Engineer’s Council. He received the award on Feb. 24, in front of 550 people at the Universal Studios Sheraton in Los Angeles. The award recognizes an individual who shows significant accomplishments in engineering innovation, engineering education, and technology leadership.

“Innovation is only possible through interest, and inspiring a student to pursue a challenging topic for technology development ultimately leading to innovation is one of the most important things we can do for students as an engineering educator,” said Ozkan in his award speech at Universal City.

Ozkan has performed pioneering research in technologies for sustainability in energy storage, nanoelectronics, and two-dimensional materials, and served as the founding graduate advisor for the UCR Materials Science and Engineering program, directly mentoring scores of graduate and undergraduate students.

Since 1955, The Engineers’ Council has presented awards honoring engineers and engineering projects at honors and awards banquets at two U.S. locations each year. This year’s Universal City event honored six UCR faculty members. Among those recognized were Charles Cai, Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), assistant adjunct professor of chemical and environmental engineering, Future Technology Leader Award; Matt Barth, director of CE-CERT and professor of electrical and computer engineering, Distinguished Achievement Award; Frank Vahid, professor of computing science and engineering, Distinguished Achievement Award; Will Grover, assistant professor of bioengineering, Outstanding Engineering Achievement Merit Award; Eamonn Keogh, professor of computer science and engineering department, Outstanding Engineering Achievement Merit Award; and Cengiz Ozkan, professor of mechanical engineering, John J. Guarrera Engineering Educator of the Year Award.

A plaque was presented to Ozkan at the Feb. 24 ceremony, citing, among other accolades, his ability to bring international attention to material sciences and engineering through the media, as well as recognition of his lifetime of leadership through professional events.

Ozkan has also been selected to receive the 2018 European Advanced Energy Award by the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM). The award will be presented at the end of March, in Stockholm, Sweden.
