Twenty Slots Offered for April 13 OpEd Project Workshop

Faculty members will examine how to use their expertise effectively and how to preach beyond the choir

Deborah Douglas is a senior leader with The OpEd Project at its UT-Austin-based Public Voices Fellowship, and a lecturer at The Medill School at Northwestern University.

The goal of the New York-based OpEd Project is to increase the range of voices and quality of ideas offered in the court of public opinion. Specifically, it has worked in the past 10 years to increase representation of women in commentary forums, such as opinion pages.

On April 13, the OpEd Project is bringing its heralded course to UC Riverside. Faculty members will have the chance to participate in the daylong workshop by applying for one of 20 slots.

“UCR faculty who have attended the OpEd Project’s workshops have found them invaluable,” said Georgia Warnke, director of the UCR Center for Ideas & Society. “We are excited to present a session on UCR’s campus.” The Center partnered with University Communications to offer the opportunity.

The workshop is hands-on, examining how to use one’s expertise effectively and how to preach beyond the choir. Participants emerge with concrete results, including the outline for an op-ed and the expectation that they will produce an opinion article within 30 days of attending. Participants will learn both the structure of an op-ed and tips for pitching the op-ed to the media.

The session will be led by Deborah Douglas, a senior leader with The OpEd Project at its UT-Austin-based Public Voices Fellowship. Douglas is a lecturer at The Medill School at Northwestern University. Douglas also worked for newspapers including the Chicago Sun-Times and has appeared on CNN.

Applications are open to everyone; the OpEd Project requests at least 50 percent representation at the workshop by women. To apply, please follow this link: https://ucriverside.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cYicqgEZhxaMUVT

Selected applicants will be notified April 7. The workshop will take place on April 13 in INTS 1113. Lunch will be served.
