UCR Athletics Names Communications Chief

Wes Mallette has held leadership roles with UC Berkeley, Pac-12 Networks

Wes Mallette has been named senior associate athletics director, external relations, for the Highlanders.

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. (www.ucr.edu) – University of California, Riverside’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department announced today that veteran strategic communications and external relations executive, Wes Mallette, has been named Senior Associate Athletics Director, External Relations for the Highlanders. In this position, Mallette will be the primary liaison between the Athletics Director and all revenue operations within Athletics. In addition, Mallette will oversee athletics strategic communications, digital and emerging media, marketing, community and fan engagement, sponsorships, and ticket sales.

“We are pleased to have Wes join our Highlander family and I am confident he will help lead our external efforts to achieve even more success as we continue to build our program,” said Tamica Smith-Jones, UC Riverside’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “Wes brings a significant amount of experience at the highest levels in Division I athletics and this will add tremendous value to our program. He also has a true ability to understand, work with and address the needs of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, donors, fans, campus and community in a meaningful and engaging way. We are excited to have him as a member of our team and UC Riverside family.”

Mallette brings extensive experience as a senior administrator in college athletics at the Division I level to the Highlanders’ rapidly rising program. He made a tremendous impact for the University of California, Berkeley’s Intercollegiate Athletics program during his tenure as Associate Athletics Director, Strategic Communications. In this capacity, Mallette and his team developed and executed strategic initiatives that resulted in significant improvement in the brand’s narrative while simultaneously strengthening relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. He also directed the department’s media strategy through a number of complex and sensitive issues, department changes and new revenue initiatives. Immediately prior to joining UC Riverside, he served as VP Communications for Pac-12 Networks.

In addition to his work in college athletics, Mallette has served in senior corporate and brand communications capacities for global brands such as BET, L-Brands’ Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, MTV Networks, and public relations and advertising agencies. He earned his B.A. from James Madison University where he was a football and track student-athlete and received his M.A. in Journalism from the University of Maryland at College Park.
