Wells Fargo Scholarships Awarded to Local STEM Students

Third- through eighth-grade students in Riverside and Coachella Valley participate in UCR Extension's Expanding Horizons with scholarship award.

For the third year in a row, Wells Fargo has generously provided scholarship funding — this year in the amount of $10,000 — to high achievers in Riverside and the Coachella Valley to participate in UCR Extension’s premier summer learning experience, “Expanding Horizons.”

The scholarships were presented to 19 students attending the one-week STEM Discovery program for students in grades three through eight at UCR Palm Desert, and 11 middle schoolers enrolling in a two-week program at the UCR Extension Center.

Expanding Horizons has been bringing fun and engaging programs to the area for the past 36 years. Students participate in STEM learning workshops exploring math, maker spaces, robotics, architecture, engineering, aeronautics, green power, business, art, design, debate, music, and more.

Research shows the achievement gap widens when kids aren’t in school, and that summer learning has a positive impact on both academic and social-emotional development. Palm Desert’s CBS affiliate featured the program in its ‘Eye on the Desert’ segment, in which two instructors, Julie Kim and Carrie Cole, discuss the many advantages of summer learning.

Michael Hanson, a fourth-grade teacher at Temecula Valley Charter School, said he is looking forward to being part of the program every summer.

“One of the beauties of the STEM and Expanding Horizons programs is the ‘no pressure’ atmosphere,” he said. “There is no testing and no grading. Students develop a renewed interest in science, math, and school in general. Our goal is to return them to school with a re-ignited passion for learning and exploring their world.”
