RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — UC Riverside staff, faculty and students will be encouraged to take the first step in walking their way to better health by participating in the third annual UCR Wellness Walk on Wednesday, May 23.

Open to all staff, faculty and students, the 20-minute walk is sponsored by the UCR Faculty and Staff Wellness Program and several collaborative partners from the Campus Wellness Oversight Committee (CWOC). The walk will be lead by Dr. Karen White, associate of the chancellor, and Tim Willette, policy analyst and information officer in Finance & Business Operations and president-elect for the UCR Staff Assembly.

“Staying active throughout the day is the key to better health and fitness,” said Wellness Program Coordinator Julie Chobdee, “Walking is the easiest form of physical activity – you can walk anytime and anywhere.”

Walk participants will meet at 11:45 at the Student Services Building lawn and the walk will begin promptly at noon, taking them on a winding 1.6 mile circuit around the campus. The first 230 people to show  up will receive a T-shirt. Other giveaways include sunscreen, lip balm as well as healthy refreshments. In addition, walk participants can also sign up for the campus WalkingFit Program.

“We will have pedometers available for any faculty/staff that wants to join WalkingFit and students can join the Go Pedometer Program provided by the student wellness partners,” Chobdee said, adding that individuals who can’t attend the walk may earn a T-shirt by filling out a pledge card and walking anytime that same day.

UC Walks will take place at each of the 10 UC campuses, as well as the Office of the President, medical centers and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 2011, 3,608 faculty, staff, retirees and students participated in the walk system-wide, walking a total of 95,945 minutes – the equivalent of 6,396 miles.

“I love the UCR Walks event. It’s a reminder that being active and taking care of yourself can be as easy as going for a walk around campus on your lunch break,” White said. “Past participants have commented on how enjoyable it was to get out of the office in the middle of the day and soak up the beauty of our campus, while others have shared that they saw areas on campus that they didn’t even know existed.”
