Two Readings at UC Riverside Celebrate Works of Novelist, Poets

Susan Straight and Juan Felipe Herrera will read from their work in separate events in October.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Award-winning writers Susan Straight, Juan Felipe Herrera and Sesshu Foster will read from their work in two separate events at the University of California, Riverside in early October.

Novelist Straight, a distinguished professor of creative writing, will read from her new book, “Between Heaven and Here,” from 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in UCR Libraries’ Special Collections & Archives, located on the fourth floor of Rivera Library. A reception and book-signing will follow. Copies of the novel will be available for sale during the reception.

On Oct. 17, Herrera and Foster will read from their work from noon to 1 p.m. in Orbach Science Library, Room 240. Light refreshments will be served.

Both events are free and open to the public. Visitor parking for both events is available in Lot 10 in pay-by-space slots at the rate of $2 per hour.

Herrera, a professor of creative writing at UCR, was named California Poet Laureate by Gov. Jerry Brown in March. His publications include collections of poetry, prose, short stories, young adult novels and picture books for children. In 2008 he received the National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry for “Half the World in Light.” He also has received numerous other awards and fellowships, including National Endowment for the Arts Writers’ Fellowships, California Arts Council grants, and the Breadloaf Fellowship in Poetry.

Foster is a poet, novelist, activist and teacher whose work has often been set in East Los Angeles. He is the author of “City Terrace Field Manual,” “Atomik Aztex” and “World Ball Notebook.” He also is the recipient of the American Book Award, Asian American Book Award and the Believer Book Award.

Straight’s newest novel is her eighth and is the final book in her Rio Seco Trilogy. Among her awards are the Lannan Literary Award for Fiction, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the O. Henry Prize and a Pushcart Prize. Her appearance is sponsored by UCR Libraries Special Collections & Archives.

The Reading Poetry event with Herrera and Foster is sponsored by the Librarians Association of the University of California, Riverside.
