Fall Plant Sale Set for Oct. 20 and 21

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — The UC Riverside Botanic Gardens (UCRBG) will host several events in the coming months, starting with the 30th annual Friends of the UCRBG Fall Plant Sale on Oct. 20 and 21 and continuing with classes for children and adults, a new Art in the Gardens event and a clean-up day.

The plant sale will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 21. Take advantage of the cool fall weather to gets plants established so they will grow faster in spring and require less water next summer.

Nearly 10,000 plants, including many rare and unusual varieties, and some old favorites will be for sale. There will be colorful, heat-loving trees and shrubs, flowering perennials, miniature roses, rare cacti and other succulents, lots of herbs, patio and houseplants, wildflower seeds and more. A special selection of showy, water-efficient and California native plants will also be available for the fall planting season.

Gardens’ staff and volunteers and UC Cooperative Extension Riverside County master gardeners will be available to answer questions. The master gardeners will also be selling herb and vegetable plants, including a number of Asian vegetables and other fall favorites.

There will also be free classes during the plant sale.

The following events are scheduled in November in the botanic gardens:

  • Nov. 10, 9:30 a.m. to noon. Herbal Gifts for the Holidays class taught by Jean Weiss, a master gardener. Class is $20 for Friends of the UCBRG and $25 for non-members. RSVP by Nov.7 by calling the garden office at 951-784-6962 or e-mailing amyucrbg@gmail.com.
  • Nov. 11, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art in the Gardens. Twelve local artists will be displaying mosaics, prints, metalwork, botanical designs, fused glass, ceramics, jewelry and watercolors in the gardens. Free admission for Friends of the UCRBG. Admission for non-members is $4. A portion of the sales will be donated to the gardens.
  • Nov. 17, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Keep Our Gardens Clean and Beautiful Day. Volunteer to rake, weed and clean up areas of the gardens. Rakes and shovels are needed if you have them. RSVP by Nov. 12 by contacting Margo Chabot at 951-312-3367 or gogochabot@earthlink.net.

The botanic gardens cover more than 40 acres and feature nearly 3,000 plant species from around the world. Enjoy beautiful vistas and numerous scenic trails, including gentle pathways graded for wheelchair access. A wide array of blooming plants can be seen year around.
